Mysteries need suspense, maybe a cliffhanger here and there, a climax, outcome and a problem of course.It should also have an unexpected twist. It can't be just "Detective Sally had always been great at solving mysteries, she had just finished one today." Fantasy stories and adventures need adventure, lively characters, and a couple mystical creatures too! Some things all stories need is climax, metaphor, detail, problem, outcome, interesting characters and a good plot and sentence structure. They also need a beginning, middle, and end. Also, every author should have something unique about their book that gives it sort of a finishing touch.
