1. It makes you calmer because when I read, as the story gets better and better, I have no care in what happens around me.

2.It can sharpen your brain(not literally) because you can learn how to spell something or you can expand your vocabulary. Once I was reading The Mysterious Benedict Society, I learned how to spell the word conscience. I spelled it wrong at school the exact same day!

3.It can help you write because when you read you see how authors write in their books. You can see how to properly write dialogue or how to indent and stuff like that. Also they might inspire you to write more.

4.It can help you sleep better because when you read a book about fiction, the story can calm you down a lot. Like books like The Hunger Games make you sit on the edge of your seat and wondering what happens next, but with books like Charlotte’s Web they are a lot calmer and they don’t make you sit on the edge of your seat.

5.Reading can activate different parts of your brain like in the video it said that “when you hear a story about running, it activates the part of your brain that makes you run”.

6.In one of the articles from “A Fine Kettle of Fish” it says that reading may even lessen the chances of Alzheimer’s disease. A quote from Dr. Robert P. Friedland says “The brain is an organ just like every other organ in the body. It ages in regard to how it is used just as physical activity strengthens the heart, muscles and bones, intellectual activity strengthens the brain against disease.”

WHY READING FICTION IS GOOD FOR YOUR BRAIN

•When you read a fiction book you remember it better, one of the reasons is if the author is talking about running the part of your brain that tells your body to run turns on so you feel like you’re the person the author is talking about.

•Another reason is it helps you imagine what the setting and characters are and look like using the words on the page. In chapter books you do that a lot because most of them don’t have pictures on the page you have to create them in your mind. That stretches your imagination.

•Reading novels also helps with your empathy level. I think this is because when the part of your brain turns on from the story from running for example the emotion part of your brain can turn on too.

•People have recently discovered that reading fiction helps you with your ‘mind reading.’ I think mind reading is when you read in your mind. Reading obviously helps you to read inside your brain.

•It also helps to relieve stress. I’m pretty sure that it is because book are soothing and when you read them you don’t have to worry about anything. It calms the brain.

•Reading helps you improve your writing skills too. Even writers, singers, politicians and even movie stars read to help them write.

•Another reason reading helps you write is when you read you are exposed to different words and you can see how the words are spelled. Over time if you read enough you will become an excellent writer.

So you see reading fiction really helps your brain.

So when you read the effects of reading are:

∙It strengthens your motor cortex and makes it function better.

Also it makes your temporal cortex which makes it so you are more receptive to language. Also your central sulkis which makes it so you can LIVE a story and think of thing like what if the story is about trains, than you think about trains, and things about trains.

And if you read fiction you can tell what someone is feeling or

Thinking about something.

And people who read nothing or something that happened and no imagination at all have a harder time doing this.

Pop fiction scores where the same as fiction

But the subjects that read Literature

Showed That they could understand the emotions of other humans.

They think this happens because literature focuses on the character’s psychological emotions.

∙Reading can calm you down.

Have something on your mind that’s getting you Stressed out? Pick up a book. in 2009 at the University of Sussex. Researchers found out that reading was the most effective way to overcome stress.

Also it helps you avoid Alzheimer's Disease.

According to research published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2001 adults who read or do puzzles, are less likely to have Alzheimer’s disease.

How reading affects your mind

•Reading keeps your brain in shape even when you’re at an old age

•Reading can relieve stress

•It can decrease the chance of getting Alzheimer’s disease

•Reading can help for a good night sleep

•May make you more empathetic

•Certain books can ease depression

Reading can also improve some skills such as increase your vocabulary because some books may have words you don’t know and can lead to you searching up their meaning and learning new words. Also books may make you feel differently if you really like the story, such as if the character is scared, you may be scared too, or if the character is happy, you may be happy too. You sometimes can share emotions with the characters in the book. These emotions can also affect you if you have depression such as when you are sharing happiness with the character in the story, it may make you feel better and relieve your depression. It can affect your writing because stories are a good example for proper writing, such as capitalizing your I’s and writing correct dialogue with indents and also proper punctuation which also ties in w

Reading Is Awesome
It’s like the reading gear turns the writing gear. Reading is pretty cool and fashionable. And if you can’t or don’t read, you can’t write. Writing is a very complicated skill. Reading is like writing’s grandparents, it is wise, and it gives great information. It helps you find inspiration, gain knowledge, learn the genre and the language, and provides you with more vocabulary. Now, imagine a coder who doesn’t test his games? A fighter who never learns any techniques and just hits? A musician who never listens to music? Same thing with writing, I mean, I read every night, and I don’t wanna brag, but I’m an excellent speller.
|:|IMPORTANT |:|
NEVER ignore reading. EVER. It is important, fun, healthy, and helps you get through life. If you can’t read, you can’t read this, street signs, math, money, or whose wallet you found on the sidewalk! If you ignore reading, GET THAT BOOK OPEN AND START READING!!!

How does reading make you a better writer?

•At the university of Sussex they did an experiment about how reading can reduce stress, they gave people in the university who were stressed out books to read and within 6 minutes the were calmed down.

•Some people from the new school also did a test about who reading LITERATURE makes you a better writer. They gave some participants non fiction , some pop fiction and some nothing at all. After they were given tests to see if they could tell what other people were feeling. People who read non fiction, pop fiction and nothing at all were not able to tell what other people were thinking but the people who read literature gained amazing ability to tell what other people were feeling.

•Researchers think that people who read pop fiction aren't able to to tell what people were thinking because it isn't well written enough, there isn’t enough depth detail.

•Can you imagine a singer who never listened to music or swimmer who did not like to get wet? You can ask the same question about writing. No grammar rules and writing techniques will help you understand your reader if you do not read yourself

How does reading affect your brain?

If you’re at a lecture about math or someone is telling you raw data or just straight facts about math, only the part of your brain that decodes information is being used. However, if you are being told a story about math, a lot more of your brain is being used. Also, the subject of the story determines the part of your brain being used. For example, if you’re hearing a story about running, your cerebral cortex is going through the same sequence it would if you were actually running. If you’ve ever been told a story, you know that it is more interesting than hearing a lecture. To prove these facts, scientists at emory university did a study where they took in volunteers. They read 30 pages of a book and then got their brain scanned. They did this for five days in a row and each time the subjects showed better language and motor skills for five days after. Another proof of concept is: another study took place but this time it was about empathy. They made some people read pop fiction, some read literary fiction, some read non fiction and some read nothing at all. After one day, they were given tests to see how much they could tell about how someone was feeling. People who read nothing or read non fiction had very little gain in empathy. People who read pop fiction show no change with empathy, but people who read literature showed massive gain in empathy.

HOW FICTION MAKES OUR

BRAINS BETTER

Relieve Stress
It doesn’t matter what book you read, but if you read with full attention, it can help escape from the worries and stresses of the everyday world.

Keep your brain sharp

Study shows that those who engaged in mentally stimulating activities, such as reading, earlier and later on in life experienced slower memory decline compared to the people who didn't.

Reduce chances of Alzheimer’s disease

Like physical activities help your heart, muscles and bones, reading and other intellectual activities strengthens the brain against alzheimer's disease and damage done to the brain.

Better sleep

Regular reading before sleep in a dim light (because if in a bright light the brain thinks it’s morning)helps you go to sleep easily because it will help the brain create dreams.

All successful people in the world are good readers like Barack Obama, Queen Elizabeth, Einstein etc.

-Reading can help keep away alzheimer’s.
In 2001, a study showed that people that did activities that involved the brain, like reading and puzzles, made them a lot less likely to get Alzheimer's disease.
-Reading can prevent stress.
Research done in 2009 showed that reading a good fiction book actually to relieve stress is actually better than drinking tea, listening to music and taking a nice long walk all together.

-Reading can help keep you smart when you’re older.
A study that was issued that had 294 participants that died at an average of 89, showed that most of the people that did brain stimulating activities, such as reading, had lost their memory much, much slower than those who didn’t.

-Reading can help you sleep better.
A lot of experiments on sleep which involved de-stressing activities before bed, such as reading, actually showed that those people slept better.

Reading is fun, and it is known to help with many things. We bet you all can find many statements about how good reading is. It can give you inspiration, fill you up with knowledge, and it can just be a hobby. Actually, a lot of famous writers, politicians, actors and singers read a lot of books. Writing is a skill. It involves practice, and it is very complicated. Want to improve your writing skills? Easy. Just read some good literature. It would work. Think it’s possible to not read ever and be a professional writer? Think again. All you have to do is look at these quotes:

“It usually helps me write by reading — somehow the reading gear in your head turns the writing gear.” -Steven Wright

“If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.” -Stephen King
