Brrrrrrrrrrr!

Watch the above videos.  What did you learn about the Polar Vortex?  Post at least 5 things you learned.

(This is not related to the Polar Vortex) Is it possible to modify the time frames of the diary?

YES!

1. The Polar Vortex we are having is not the big one.

2. In other places of the world, the opposite is happening. it is REALLY hot.

3. California is having a drought.

4. This year, a record was broken (that's how cold it is)

5. Some people say all of this is the cause of global warming.

I wanted to add some more

6. The big polar vortex is rotating above our heads about 30 km in the sky (the stratosphere)

7. Europe cannot have any polar vortexes because the atlantic air warms any air coming towards Europe.

8. Europe's cold weather comes form the east (Siberia)

9. In California, the risk of wildfires is high

10. The last time it was this cold was about 2 decades (20 years) ago

Disclaimer:
I did do additional research, but still mainly focused on the video. Yes, I know 14 facts is a little outrageous. Mrs O’Hara didn't have a limit on facts and I’m in a good mood. All explaining has been done.

1. A Polar vortex is a group of cold air swirling above us at around 30 km.
2.there are smaller groups of air, but the main one is in our stratosphere
3. The polar vortex frigid air can’t reach Europe, because the Atlantic Ocean gets rid of all cold air.
4.Usually the cold weather in Europe is from Siberia
5.Like Xavier said we broke a record this year. Yep it’s that cold.
6.To add on not only this year but it’s been the coldest it has ever had been for the USA and some of Canada for 20 years.
7.The movie “The day after tomorrow” (2004) is about a freak ice age. This is because of the Polar vortex.
8. Also People think that movie is over exaggerating things a little and they are, but not to much. Paleoclimatologist Daniel Schrag said “I’m concerned that people will see these over-the-top effects and think the whole thing is a joke…
We are indeed experimenting with the Earth in a way that hasn’t been done for millions of years.”
9. Yes Xavier, the Polar Vortex is likely because of Global warming.
10. Paleoclimatologists are people who study climate changes to the earth. These people would be the ones studying the Polar Vortex.
11.Global warming may be causing weird Climate changes. In January New York had experienced strange climate changes. I mean CRAZY! 55 fahrenheit to 4 fahrenheit and then back up. 12. In other places instead of being bitter cold, it’s burning hot. Places like Australia and Brazil everyone is sweating their faces off. Here we are bundled up for the blizzards.
13. California is in danger. Many wildfires are occurring because of the droughts.
14. Places in the USA are having full weeks off because of frosty Temperatures. Snow day, more like snow weeks.

I knew you would make a good weatherman Ronan!

1. The polar vortex is a "huge chunk of frigid atmosphere" that rotates above us in the stratosphere (about 30 km above us)

2. The polar vortex spins because the earth spins.

3. The polar vortex's cold air reflects down lower south.

4. The polar vortex usually only is extended down south because of the jet stream.

5. The jet stream picks up the cold air, and makes it travel further south.

6. Although the jet stream goes through Europe, the cold air doesn't reach there, because the Atlantic Ocean warms it up.

7. Europe's cold air usually comes from Siberia.

8. Some people say that global warming is not true because of this sudden frigid weather, but you can't tell just because of one event.

9. Global warming is happening. Most of these weird events are happening because of it.

10. In New York, it was 12 degrees Celsius, then it dropped to about -16 degrees Celsius.

11. While it is cold here, in many places around the world are experiencing very hot weather.

12. In Central Europe and Russia, temperatures are 11 degrees higher than usual. When we are getting extreme cold.

13. California is having droughts and is in danger of wildfires.

14. Australia had heatwaves ranging up to 50 degrees Celsius!

15. Many people lost power during this time, many US states had to stay home for many weeks.

I AM THE WEATHERMAN!

These are some things I learned from the video about the Polar Vortex:

1. It’s a huge “chunk” of frigid atmosphere rotating/spinning/swirling, like our earth, 30km above us.

2. Lots of people think it’s because of global warming.

3. In some parts of the world, like California, it’s very hot that there’s forest fires, and in other parts of the world, very cold. Also, the last time it was this cold was two decades ago.

4. The Polar Vortex “works in harmony” with the jet stream.

5. The jet stream sometimes follows the same winding path, and goes in the same direction, underneath the Polar Vortex.

6. The jet stream digs so far south, that sometimes it breaks off and actually traps, a bit of cold polar air.

7. This air is sometimes the reason for really cold temperatures in that area.

8. Some people wonder if the cold polar air will reach Europe, but it won’t. They coldness in Europe will mostly be from Siberia.
