The Niagara Tunnel is being dug using a Tunnel Boring Machine, or TBM affectionately named "Big Becky" in honour of Sir Adam Beck. The machine will bore a hole about 10.4 kilometers long and about 14.4 meters in diameter under the City of Niagara Falls from the Niagara River to the SAB complex. This massive undertaking will create about 1.6 million cubic meters of rock and debris.

First constructed in 1922, the initial Sir Adam Beck power generating station, now abbreviated as SAB 1, derived its water supply from a canal connected to the Welland River. However, due to increased power demand in later years, a second generating station, known as SAB 2, was constructed in 1954. It in turn derives its water supply from two diversion tunnels, each about 9kilometres in length.

Due to slower than projected boring progress caused by constant tunnel roof over-break, the project completion date has been extended to at least 2013 with a total projected cost of $1.6B.

This week’s where in the world in the drilling project in Niagara Falls. They are using this drill, Big Becky, to provide water for thousands of Canadians for a hundred years. This will provide water because, they are drilling a path under the Niagara River, and this will allow the water to flow through an alternate path line. The water will boost the annual output by 1.6 billion kilowatt hours. The drill Big Becky works by, there are round, sort of cylindrical containers attached to large metal bars that form a circle. Each of these individual round cylinders is a cutter. They cut the rock. The large metal circle also spins rapidly to cut the rock. There are holes where the rock that is cut can go through. There are also collector bins that collect the rock thrown backward by the drill. Big Becky is a huge drill. She is 4, ooo tons. She has been drilling since 2006, having finally broke through in 2011. The project is a year overdue. Big Becky is drilling a tunnel 10.2 kilometres through the Niagara escarpment. The tunnel has been drilled, supports have been put down and all that is left to do it cement the tunnel. But, the project is long overdue. By a year and money. Before the tunnel can be opened to the public, money is needed to finish the job.

This weeks "Where in the World" was the "Niagara Tunnel." The Ontario Power Generation awarded a $600 million contract to Strabag AG Company to design and build the Niagara Tunnel. After that a groundbreaking ceremony was held. The Province of Ontario Minister of Energy, Donna Cansfeild, visited the site and nicknamed the tunnel boring machine "BIG BECKY."

This weeks Where In The World is the Drilling Project in Niagra Falls. They are using a huge drill called "Big Becky", a 4,000 ton drill, to drill a tunnel. This tunnel will bring water to thousands of people for a hundred years because they are drilling a path under the Niagra River. The project completion date was extended to 2013. This all costed $1.6B.

The Niagara Tunnel project is drilling underneath Niagara Falls with a drilling machine called BIg Becky". This tunnel will have Niagara waters rushing through it to meet Ontario's power needs. The speed and volume of the water would fill an olympic swimming pool in a matter of seconds!

Daniel that was copied! With the exception of a few minor words the rest matched word for word several other results.

However, due to increased power demand in later years, a second generating station, known as SAB 2, was constructed in 1954. It derives its water supply from two diversion tunnels, each about 9 kilometres in length. In 1958, a reservoir and the SAB Pump were constructed in order to make better use of available water by storing it during periods of low demand and using it in periods of greater demand in order to maximize the efficiency of the stations in regards to electricity supply and demand.

Between 1996 and 2005, Ontario Power Generation, which owns and operates the SAB complex, completed a series of major upgrades at the SAB 2 plant, increasing its potential generating capacity by 194 megawatts. Water delivered by the new Niagara Tunnel will complement this SAB 2 upgrade, and overall will increase the efficient use of the power of the Niagara River.

The TBM operates about 140 meters below the ground, and as a result, the vibrations from the machine will not be felt on the surface. The design-build contractor for the project is Strabag AG, a large construction group with extensive experience in large tunnel construction.[1] Due to slower than projected boring progress caused by constant tunnel roof over-break, the project completion date has been extended to at least 2013 with a total projected cost of $1.6B.[2]

This week’s where in the world is the Big Becky TMB Breakthrough. It is located in Niagara Falls, Ontario 43°N and 78°W. ALso known as the Niagara Tunnel Project in honour of Adam Beck. This is the largest tunnel project in Canada. It runs 450 feet under the city of Niagara Falls. Big Becky is 40.4 feet in diameter and drills through the 420,000,000 million old rock 450 feet below the surface of the ground.
It is then cemented and it is going to be a tunnel the water will gush through approximately 600,000,000 miles per hour. This will provide electricity for a lot of houses for a hundred years. Hydroelectric power is renewable which means you can use it again and again. Big Becky is about 4,000 tons. On March 1st, 2011 Big Becky was finished tunneling over 10km for the Niagara Tunneling Project. It is manned by 3 mining crews and maintained by a few of the area’s finest tradesman.
