The Cats in Krasinski Square

We will be reading the book - The Cats in Krasinski Square by Karen Hesse, in class.
"When Newbery Medalist Karen Hesse came upon a short article about cats out-foxing the Gestapo at the train station in Warsaw during WWII, she couldn't get the story out of her mind. The result is this stirring account of a Jewish girl's involvement in the Resistance. This fictional account, born of meticulous research, is a testament to history and to our passionate will to survive, as only Karen Hesse can write it."  - Scholastic.com

I have provided you with a written copy of the story and a video (to music) below.  Three of the main characters we have read about lately have been girls: Hana, Rose, and the main character in The Cats in Krasinski Square (Mira's sister).  What character traits do they all have in common? Explain.

I was very curious as to whether or not the cats were actually involved in "outfoxing the Gestapo" at the train station in Warsaw during WWll. I spent at least a half hour searching for the actual article that Hesse was referring to - no luck. I finally decided to check out the author's blog (which is great for aspiring writers, by the way) and I found this question from another curious reader and an answer (from Karen Hesse).

All of the girls in the stories (so far) are brave, and are willing to help others, no matter the cost. They show compassion and are innocent, never to purposely hurt someone. They also show bravery, and persistence, not giving up, even though things get tough, or they get caught or hurt in the process. They all seem to have the urge to do what’s right, and won’t crack under the pressure.

"Hana's suitcase", "Rose Blanche" and "The cats in Krasinski square" are all books from the holocaust, they all have a girl as a main character, and those girls have things in common like these examples.

So,first of all They are all girls that lived in the time of the holocaust. Two of them are girls that were Jews getting treated bad and one of them was a German, who saw the holocaust from the other way (not being the Jews that were put in concentration camps but a German that smuggled food for the Jews). Sadly Hana and Rose died ( well we think rose died) but Mira's sister survived. Obviously they are all girls to. They are all willing to help others (especially in the books "The cats in Krasinski square" and "Rose Blanche"). Examples are Rose smuggling food for others.

The character traits Hana, Rose and Mira’s sister have in common are that they are all brave. Hana was brave for the whole time she was being sent to a concentration camp, Rose was brave to bring food to the Jews and Mira’s sister was brave to let the cats loose to make a distraction so that the Jews could grab the food before the people carrying the food were arrested, injured or killed. They were all girls, though that isn’t really a character trait. They all tried to help in some way, which means they are all sympathetic. They were all affected by the Nazis/Jews, which of course changed them a lot. But still, they were brave and tried to help the Jews as much as possible, even though Rose wasn't being sent to a camp or anything, and Mira's sister wasn't being directly affected by the Nazis because nobody suspected that she was a Jew.

The traits that Hana, Rose, and the main character in The cats on Krasinski square, are brave and help others, like Hana stayed brave from all that she went through, like how she lost her mother and father, then her brother went somewhere too. What Rose did, was she tried to give some people she didn't even know some bread, even though she might get in very big trouble doing it. What the main character in The cats on Krasinski square did, was she did almost the same thing as Rose, but she tried to smuggle food right in front of the guards, wich is brave.

I think what Hana Brady, Rose Blanche and Mira's sister all have in common is that they are all caught in the middle of a terrible thing, and they just want to help. but they also are all girls and they all have families that love them very much. they also think very bad of the Nazis.

The character traits do they all have in common are:
- They are all girls!
- The books are all about the holocaust.
- They all are very hopeful.
- They are all a little confused.
- They try to help.
- They are persistence.
- They are brave.
- They never try to do anything to hurt someone.
- They all suffered from the holocaust.

Rose, Hana, and Mira's sister are similar because they all really want to do something about it, even if they are not able to. Rose and Mira's sister both actually help by helping to smuggle food into the camps. All three of them were very brave , but they were brave in different ways. Mira's sister and Rose both took great risk in order to help the people in the concentration camps. Hana had to be brave in order to not loose hope when she was in the concentration camps. Both Hana and Rose did not entirely understand what was going on. Mira's sister knew completely what was happening. They all tried to help those that they loved by neglecting themselves, especially Hana, who let her brother George eat the very little food that she got each week.

The character traits that they all have in common are that obviously they were all girls, and they all lived in Europe. They all were in or near the events of "The Holocaust"
2 of them (Rose and the main character in The Cats in Krasinski Square) were caring for and helping the prisoners in the Ghettos. The other girl (Hana) was on of the prisoners. They were all careing and none of them were mean or not nice.

All of these characters have a few things in common, here they are:

Rose, Hana, and Mira’s sister, are all very brave. I know this because, Hana was in the concentration camp for 2 years, where she was killed, but she was still very brave. Rose was a German girl, who risked her own life, to help the Nazi’s. Also, Mira’s sister was very brave to smuggle food, and keep on smuggling, even when there were crazy dogs, trying to sniff her out. They are also all very smart. Hana was smart enough to figure out about where George had gone, when she did not see him anymore. Rose was smart enough to dodge the guard. Mira’s sister was smart enough to use the cats, to help her with the smuggling, so that the guards would suspect that the cats just took it, if they even suspected something at all!

The things the four books, 'Hana's Suitcase', ‘Rose Blanche’, 'Terrible Things', and The Cats in Krasinski Square have in common are:
-They are all related to the Holocaust.
-They all are brave and try to resist or help out for each other, even Rose Blanche, a German girl helped out for the Jews by delivering some food in her attic to the Jew even though their whole city was hungry, the book noted that only their mayor got a lot of food.
-The main characters were all girls (except for Terrible things with the animals).
-The books are all very great, reminding us about the Holocaust and its terror.
-They tried to help each other, especially the books with the Jewish people as the main character.
-They were all in some way affected by the Nazis during their time.

Hana, Rose, and Mira’s sister all have a couple of things in common. They all were very brave. Hana was the only one who got killed in the concentration camp, there fore, she still had her head up high trying to look on the bright side. Rose was brave enough to sneak out of school by herself, and go feed the people in the concentration camps bread. Mira’s sister was brave enough to break the law by going outside the walls of Ghetto with lots of stray cats and, distract the dogs from sniffing her out (the dogs were trying to sniff out the smuggler.) and actually smuggled the bread, so she can bring it back to her town and share it with the others.

Also, all of the girls thought it was wrong the way the Jewish people were being treated.
they thought it was unfair how the Jewish people were being sent to concentration camps, and being separated from the rest. Even though Rose is not Jewish, she still thinks it’s not fair.

I think that Hana Brady from 'Hana's Suitcase,' Rose Blanche from 'Rose Blanche,' and Mira's sister in 'The Cats in Krasinski Square' are all similar in these ways:

First of all, they are all young girls in WWII. They may have been affected differently, but they are still similar in that sense. They were affected differently in the way that Hana and Mira's sister were Jewish, while Rose was not. Rose and Hana die, while Mira's Sister survives.

Another similar trait is that all three characters try to help others during the war. Hana attempts to help her Grandmother, but sadly the Grandmother dies, Rose tries to help people in a Ghetto by giving them food, and Mira's Sister tries to help people in the Ghetto by giving them food.

All three of these characters are brave and full of compassion and would never dream of hurting somebody, which makes a great role-model. I would gladly be friends with these three people, and I hope you would to.

To answer your question:
First things, first. They all lived during the holocaust and had it effect them in some way. Also in "Cats in Kraskinski square" and "Rose Blanche" they helped out in the war even tho Rose never seemed to know about the war. While in "Hana's Suitcase" (From what i can gather from the video.) is about a girl who was a jew. A person in the middle of the conflict. Either way all the girls have something else in common: What they did made a difference or changed there lives forever. Another point to make is that in "Rose Blanche" and "Hana's Suitcase" is that they were getting thin. But of course Rose gave her food to jews that didn't have anything like Hana, so we can think that her act as well as Mira's sister did a huge act of kindness and were brave enough to do something and not just sit back and watch tv. We girls care. :)

I think the characters Hana, Rose, and Mira’s sister in The Cats in Krasinski Square because they all take part in the Holocaust. I also think they were all suffering from the tragedies going on all around them, and how they all seemed to care when all the heartless Nazis were taking away and killing the Jews. I think they are all brave, and selfless. Now that I think about it, I think that a lot of people think they would be brave enough to do something like that, but when it is the time to do that brave thing, they would start to have second thoughts, or even end up not doing it. I think that it takes a strong character, like these girls, to not turn back, and stand up for what is right.

Character traits that the three girls, Hana, Rose, and Mira's sister, have in common are:

Bravery - All three girls were very brave during this horrible time and they didn’t hide and they didn’t try and run away. They fearlessly faced what was happening and even tried to stop or at least subdue the horrors that happened to the others or in some cases to themselves. They were very strong and brave in that time of darkness.
An example of Hana being brave - An example of Hana (from ‘Hana’s Suitcase’) being brave is when they put her into the concentration camp and she stayed strong the entire time.
An example of Rose being brave - An example of Rose (from ‘Rose Blanche - A Different Perspective’) being brave is when she followed the truck into the forest and found out that it stopped at a Jewish Concentration Camp, when she saw them she went out of hiding and gave them some food.
An example of Mira’s sister being brave - An example of Mira’s sister (from ‘The Cats In Krasinski Square’) being brave is when she decided to try and escape the Concentration camps, she could have been killed! That took loads of guts.

Selflessness - All girl didn’t just think of themselves during this time, they helped others instead of thinking of themselves and that’s an important trait.
An example of Hana being selfless - An example of Hana (from ‘Hana’s Suitcase’) being selfless is when she tried to be brave, not for her own sake, but for others. She needed to be strong, although it was hard and she didn’t want to, she did.
An example of Rose being selfless - An example of Rose (from ‘Rose Blanche - A Different Perspective’) being selfless is when she went to the Jewish Concentration camp every day to give them food. Even though she was getting thinner, she continued to sacrifice her life everyday for other to get food.
An example of Mira’s sister being selfless - An example of Mira’s sister (from ‘The Cats In Krasinski Square’) being selfless is when she decided to try and escape the Concentration camp and, even though she was safe, she wanted to help the others by putting herself in danger. She smuggled food into the camps even though something horrible could have happened to her and if that’s not selfless, I don’t know what is.

I think reading about the Holocaust has been very inspiring for me and these three girls were very amazing. Even though two of them weren’t exactly well... real.

Yea! That happened to me once posted something so that's why I put them in 'these things' now.

Hana, Rose, and Mira's sister all showed courage. When they were faced with a difficult, dangerous situation they didn't loose hope. They pushed through to help others. Rose and Mira's sister showed compassion and kindness to those who needed their help. They both went out of their way to feed people who were imprisoned. All three girls were very brave, risking their freedom to make sure others were okay. They obviously were not selfish, but selfless, putting other people first, not regarding their position. Rose, Hana, and Mira's sister were all young brave girls, even heroes. They have a very good consistence, and they did what was right.
