I belive the underground railroad meant it was a secret way of getting from the states to canada for african slaves who wanted freedom (most of them wanted to escape others stayed because it was futile to leave) it wasnt acctually underground and it wasnt even a railroad it was a way of saying "transportation from south to north." I also think it is wrong to enslave people that are different because of their skin is brown or their head is bald. some things I find interesting are: people helped people accross the border, guys would jump in the water to throw off their sent to make sure dogs wouldnt find them, some people went into towns to meet their next conductor, when people finnaly reached the border canadians welcomed them with open arms, the railroad acctually started in 1780 but helped slaves in the 1830s.
The "underground railroad" wasn't actually a railroad with train tracks and the "conductors" were people(freed slaves or anti-slavery supporters) who "carried cargo" (nickname for the escaping slaves) across the border to the safety of Canada. The railroad itself is actually a series of secret paths and safehouses. some other terminology includes "stations" that are safehouses or safe spots. "station masters" people who let "cargo" in their safehouse. and lastly "shepherds" were people who helped slaves find the railroad.
1-is only recognized/celebrated in the USA, the UK and canada 2-began in 1926 in the US when Carter Woodson and the Study of Negro Life and History association announced the second week of february to be Negro History Week. 3-was chosen to be in february because both abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass were born in that month. 4-was called "negro history week" until the House of Commons in Canada changed it to be recognized as "Black History Month" 5-is celebrated in february.
