Part 1. Watch the above Erica Kochi video. How is Kochi using computer code to make the world a better place?

Kochi is using computer code to make the world a better place by introducing code to people who live in rural areas, or are poor. She is linking less fortunate people (like most who live in Africa) to the rest of the world by using code. Kochi says while visiting a village in eastern Senegal, “What coding allowed us to do, was to build systems to communicate with thousands of people, hundreds of thousands of people even, around the world.” Coding can make the world a better place, by letting people around the globe communicate, no matter where they live.

Part 2. Open - "Why coding is a big deal" - Do you agree?

Before visiting https://www.madewithcode.com/bigdeal, I thought code was just theses programs you go on to make games, and share with others. But after visiting the site, I thought, Wow, code is much more than making games. People around the globe depend on code to communicate with others. People’s education depend on code. So therefore, I agree that coding is a big deal. -Lucas

[Q] Watch the above Erica Kochi video. How is Kochi using computer code to make the world a better place?

I believe that Erica Kochi is using code to make the world a better place. In the video she says “what coding allowed to do was to build systems to communicate with thousands of people.” This means that Kochi helped people in poverty communicate with each other over long distances. Another point which is even more important is “Only one in three children have their birth officially registered. Through code we were able to register children’s birth all across Nigeria. We could insure that children get immunized, ensure that they get treated for HIV, ensure that children stay in school” This right here is pretty huge. For example, coding has helped children get immunized for many diseases that they may not be able to pay to help (because some of these people are in poverty.) Kochi has proven that coding can make the world a better place.

[Q] 2. Open - “Why is coding a big deal” - Do you agree?

I agree with “Made w/ Code” that coding is a big deal, and should be taught.
“For students today, coding is becoming an essential skill, just like reading, writing, and math.” This statement is true. Coding is necessary for many successful jobs in the future. Coding isn't just making flash games online. It’s a way of learning. Many things have greater limits /are better with code. So in conclusion, code should be learned. No, it should be reinforced among students, so they can all have bright futures at doing whatever. If you’re a doctor, veterinarian, engineer, etc. you should be using code.

1. Kochi is using computer code to make the world a better place by using code to create systems that allow her (and Unicef - Kochi leads innovation there) to communicate with hundreds of people all over the world. These systems help because (according to the Erica Kochi code video) people can “...register children’s births all across Nigeria,” and “Insure that children get immunized, insure that they get treated for HIV, insure the children stay in school, and insure that they’re protected from a whole range of things.” Because of the fact that the people at Unicef know about births, illnesses, education, and dangers (for children) in remote parts of the world, they can send help to that part of the world because they know about any issues that are taking place. The communication system can also help Unicef make sure that illnesses and dangers don’t occur in the first place. Without these dangers in more remote parts of the world, the world would certainly be a better place.

2. Yes, I do agree with “Why Coding is a Big Deal.” According to “Why Coding is Big Deal,” coding can be used for fields like “race car driving… medicine... social media, music, crime-scene investigation, video gaming, fashion, farming, government, education, design, manufacturing, or film and special effects.” The amount of fields that code is important in is very large. Coding is important because, as I have said, it is used in so many fields, and people need to know how to code in order to have certain jobs. Also, “Why Coding is a Big Deal” says that “According to the U.S. Department of Labour, by the time girls (who are currently) in middle school go to college, there will be one million more CS jobs than computer scientists to fill them.” In other words, when we grow up, there will be a lot of CS jobs that can be filled, and in if children (particularly girls) don’t learn coding, these jobs will never be filled, and that would not be good. Coding is a big deal.

1. Watch the above Erica Kochi video. How is Kochi using computer code to make the world a better place?

Erica Kochi is using coding in many ways to make the world a better place. She found out that in a place where there is no roads or electricity, people still had cell phones. With this technology they have, Kochi found a way to make their life easier and safer. “Through code we were able register children's births all across Nigeria. We could insure that children get immunized, ensure that children get treated for HIV, ensure that children stay in school and insure that their protected from a whole range of things.” Kochi and her coding help save lives and improve the health of millions of people.

Yes! As technology grows we are going to need more coding. And there are so many uses for it: “social media, music, crime-scene investigation, video gaming, fashion, farming, government, education, design, manufacturing, or film and special effects...” It really is a useful skill that may come in handy in the future. Really handy. I think that one day we will be using robots and computers to help us with everyday jobs like being a cashier or waiter for example. What do you need for programming these robots? Code!
“According to the U.S. Department of Labour, by the time girls (who are currently) in middle school go to college, there will be one million more CS jobs than computer scientists to fill them.” Technology and code is sculpting our future. Think about life-changing inventions? Think about all of the things you use everything. Tell me, how many of them needed some type of code to be created or work? This amount will only get bigger and bigger. And we are going to need more people to contribute. Put their ideas and make the world a better place.

I'm using code to bold this text.

1. Watch the above Erica Kochi video. How is Kochi using computer code to make the world a better place?
I think that Kochi is using computer code to make the world a better place because she is communicating with poor people around the world, and asking them questions about how their life conditions are, and things like “Have all the children in your family been immunized? How often do you use a mosquito net? Is the water functioning in your village? etc.” She is helping people who are poor, and ensuring that they are healthy. She is going to countries that aren’t as healthy, or lucky as ours, and she is allowing them to communicate with hundreds of thousands of people. She is making sure that they are healthy, because as Kochi said, “Health is a prerequisite to everything else in life. If you aren’t healthy, it doesn’t matter how educated you are, it doesn’t matter what kind of job you have, it doesn’t matter how rich you are, how poor you are. If you don’t have health, you don’t have anything. ”

I definitely agree with them. I think that it is sad that only 40% of female college freshman are planning to major in Computer Science, because it is such an amazing thing to learn, and it is so important in life. As it says on “Why coding is a big deal,” “With code you can...build a robot that can help doctors and nurses save lives.” Code is such a big part of learning, and “today, how we learn, teach, work, play, travel, and share are all made with code.” I was very surprised to learn that once girls in middle school go to college, 1 million more CS jobs than real computer scientists to fill them. Overall, I think that coding is a VERY big deal, and that we are very lucky to have it in our lives.

That is all.

Thank you, thank you very much.

Kochi is using computer code to make the world a better place by communicating with people that have cell phones. One in three children do not have their birth registered. With code, Kochi was able to register many children's births all across Nigeria. With cell phones, Kochi could easily send a message to others that own cell phones to ensure that children are immunized, that children attend school, that children with HIVs get treated and cared for, and make sure that children are protected. They can ensure that villages have the basic needs, like running water, and that everyone has a voice, including the children.

2. Open "Why Coding Is A Big Deal" - Do you agree?
I agree completely to what Google is telling us. Coding is a great skill to have for the future since technology is advancing, slowly but surely. But because many girls don't have career plans that include coding, our future of technology will not include many women's ideas. Plus, if only the 0.4% of female college freshman major in CS, and “According to the U.S. Department of Labor, by the time girls in middle school go to college, there will be one million more CS jobs than computer scientists to fill them.” That isn’t good, because we need scientists, men as well as women, to create our future of technology. Our world won’t advance without CS.

1. Watch the above Erica Kochi video. How is Kochi using computer code to make the world a better place?

In the video, Erica Kochi showed herself seeing many different people still having pieces of technology, especially cell phones, even when living in such remote and rural areas where there wasn’t even electricity. Using “Code”, people have developed programs in the phone to alert UNICEF and other organizations if something important happens. If there are diseases, the organizations can try to take care of the people who have those diseases.
It is amazing how Code can help with such things that you’d normally have to go so far to register for those things in rural areas like those, meanwhile, now they can have those services and call for help at the tip of their fingers.
These people's lives have probably changed significantly. They can make sure that they are immunized or treated for the common diseases in Africa—such as malaria, HIV, and AIDs, register for birth, report death, or even talk to the organizations about if their children are in school or not, and if different problems arise, such as “water functioning in your village,” as mentioned in the video. This program also ensures that those people, “have a voice.”
Overall, code can make the world a better place, because it has convenience, you don’t have to travel to talk, and it has a very wide range, and not very much is needed to communicate with code.

2. Open - "Why coding is a big deal" - Do you agree? Post your response.

I agreed with the statements in the site that says “Why coding is a big deal”. I like this idea because there are many different possibilities with coding, especially in the future. In the future, as technology develops, many different types of opportunities will be made with Code. Computer code will eventually be essential for many different careers—whether it is engineering, medicine, government, or almost any different job you can think of. Females are a big part of many of these jobs, so it would be important for them to be able to learn coding, or else coding, which is an important part of these jobs, won’t be represented. That was the main gist of the article, and I basically think the same things, that coding will be a big thing in the future, and that females need to be able to learn CS more, and participate in it, since there are very few that actually do CS.

I completely agree with “Why coding is a big deal”! Code is really amazing. There are so many different things that you can do with code. A lot of us play video games, and we all really like them. Without code, none of these things could have happened. To find out that “only 0.4% of female college freshman are planning to major in Computer Science” is really sad because code is such an amazing thing. We can change the world with code.

How is Erica Kochi using computer code to make the world a better place?

Erica Kochi is using computer code to make the world a better place because “even though there was no electricity, no roads, people still had cellphones.” So with coding, Erica could ask the people questions about their health and help them, without having to travel around the world. Erica is using computer code in a way that is helping keep people alive and well, and is making the world a better place.

Open - "Why coding is a big deal" - Do you agree?

I definitely agree because Computer Science (CS) is needed to do many things, including what is listed above, to help people and keep them healthy. Code is used for almost everything, to powering cars, to keeping your house warm, to keeping the stores that hold food running. Those already seem like good reasons to go into CS, right? If not, there are more. CS grants you the “ highest entry-level salary of any bachelor’s degree.” That is why I agree with "Why coding is a big deal"

1. Erica Kochi is using code to make the world a better place, because in eastern sinigon, people there don't have roads or electricity, but they have cell phones. She is using code so the people there can send messages or call thousands of people around the world. Through code, they have been able to make sure they get immunized, keep children in school, make sure they are protected and much more.

2. I agree with "Why coding is a big deal" because code allows anyone to be an innovator and create new things. For example, in the text, it says "or even build a robot that can help doctors and nurses save lives," which would be a really good invention to help others. Code can also make not just doctors and nurses lives easier, but anyone's life easier, like an invention that help people learn how to play instruments. We also have to be aware that code doesn't go too far and make people lose their jobs to machines!

1. Watch the above Erica Kochi video. How is Kochi using computer code to make the world a better place?

Erica is using computer code to make the world a better place by building various things with code that can help people who wouldn’t typically use code. These inventions can “...register children’s births all across Nigeria… ensure that children get immunized, ensure that they get treated for HIV, ensure that children stay in school, and ensure that they’re protected from a whole range of things”. It also lets people in isolated towns or villages contact other people who live farther away. Even if the town or village has no access to electricity or cars, using code everyday is still possible.

2. Open - "Why coding is a big deal" - Do you agree? Post your response.

I agree with "Why coding is a big deal". This is because coding is not only a very important skill, it is used in most jobs, and is essential if you want to be successful while you’re working. Coding “includes the knowledge and skills necessary to build the next generation of software and hardware tools that the world needs” and, in the future, will be even more important. If nobody starts learning it now, then it will be harder to learn it later. Learning computer science and coding can help you get a job in that field later, which is not only a great job opportunity, but also will pay a lot and the things you do with code can help people and be very useful.

I am enjoying reading your responses. I also think learning to code is important! It will be interesting to see how many of you end up using code in the future.
