Where in The World - due Fri., Sept. 19th

http://goo.gl/zQKTeb

Thanks to Noah who presented us with a riddle which opened up all kinds of questions.  I have included an article and video above which may clarify some of the information which students were sharing - especially Lucas who seemed to have a lot of background knowledge.
What kind of character traits do you think an individual would possess who explores The North Pole?  Post your response.

The kind of character traits I think an individual would possess who explores The North Pole would be bravery, adventurism, curiosity, experience and intelligence. The character must adapt to it's surrounding well and adapt to the cold temperatures. He must also be cautious of thin ice, jumping from iceberg to iceberg, and blizzards.

To explore the North Pole an explorer would have to be brave, careful, strong, and knowledgable. An explorer needs these traits because the conditions are very cold, and the ice could split apart, causing you to fall in the frigid water below. To be exact in the winter it can get as cold as -70 degrees celcius. In winter it is very dark so you would need a flashlight. -Lucas

The characteristic traits you would need to explore are to be able to withstand the cold because of the extreme temperatures, bravery to even start the journey, being able to swim good for the melted ice, jumping long and high to get from one iceberg to another, strength to pull yourself out of the water while in it, and lots of intelligence to cover all of that. You will possibly survive the extreme weather if you have all these amazing traits.

The kind of characteristic traits I think a person would have if they explore the North Pole are:
-Bravery: They would need to be brave enough to know what they are going to face, such as the brutally cold conditions in the North Pole.
-Experience:They would need experience with walking on snow, as it is hard to walk on snow, and it is slippery because there is ice in the North Pole (you have to learn that if you are travelling on foot.). Also, there is a lot of darkness in the North Pole, it does not get that much light, in fact, in the North Pole, I think the sun sets only once per year. It gets six months of darkness (although through some days, there is just civil or astronomical twilight instead of night), so they would have to learn how to travel in the dark if it was in the winter months.
-Intelligence: You will need a lot of intelligence in dangerous situations, such as if your boat hits an iceberg, you would have to think quick and remember safety procedures.
-You would have to be careful because the ice is drifting on the ocean in the Arctic, it could melt away and you could fall in the ocean or it could crack and you would drift away. You would also have to be alert for many things because of the drifting ice.

I saw that Noah had left a riddle. I've been thinking about something pretty hard recently, and here it is. If everything is made up of atoms, then what are atoms made out of, and then those? then those? etc. it can't just stop, but also it can't go on infinitely either. something that has been bugging me anyway. I found this interesting and i think your students will too, share it with them.

Yeah, I never thought of that...

Someone who wanted to explore the north pole had to be brave, strong, athletic, orderly (so that they can go to the North Pole with a coat and everything they need instead of nothing), knowledgeable or smart, and experienced.

They also would need to be smart with money because it'll probably cost something to get everything that you need to go to the North Pole, let alone how you're going to get there.

The character traits that a person who explores the North Pole would be bravery, to be able to even commit to the mission that they are going on, strength, to fight the blizzards, and storms, intelligance, to know his/her way around the place, and finally, insulation, to keep warm in the cold, cold tempuratures.

P.S. Kieran, COOL PROFILE PICTURE!

I think the character traits someone possess who reaches the North Pole would be bravery, intelligence experience and the taste for adventure.
You would have to be able to experience harsh weather and environment, jumping from iceberg to iceberg and avoiding icy water, and to keep as warm as possible in the cold temperatures.

The character traits I think you would need to explore the North Pole are: brave, adventurous, knowledgeable, experienced, good at navigation, cautious, adaptable, and strong.

Bravery and adventurousness give you the courage to get started on the journey. The Arctic is dangerous and it would be scary jumping from ice floe to ice floe and swimming in cold, frigid waters.

The knowledge, experience, and navigation skill will help you plan the trip and know how to survive if you have a problem. You need to know what to bring, where to go, and how to get there safely.

Along the way, cautiousness helps you to be safe. Adaptability helps because at the North Pole it is extremely cold. You also need strength for swimming, jumping, and carrying equipment.

If I had all these traits I think it would be cool to go to to North Pole!

I think a individual would have to possess most of these traits to be able to go to the North Pole:
Bravery - You definitely need to be brave to go to the North Pole. (There are Polar Bears!)
Intelligence - You need to have intelligence, and be smart to navigate your way around, and knowing what, and what not to do.
Watchfulness - You need to be careful and have caution 24x7!
Athleticness - You need to be athletic person to go to the “Pole” because you might be jumping icebergs and avoiding things.
Adventuress - You need to want to be seeking adventure and a challenge! If you’re not willing to take on an adventure, well the North Pole is not the place for you!
Positivity and Perseverance - You should never give up or have a negative attitude when you’re doing something hard, or taking on a challenge in the North Pole.
Respect - You should have respect to all the nature, and animal, life while in the North Pole. (Even though there’s probably not a lot)

Someone with all these traits would be the perfect person to go to the North Pole! ;)

I think you'd would need to be very brave, positive, not get discouraged easily, adventurist, intelligent fit, good at maintaining him or herself, experienced in the outdoors and very focused. I think you need these skills to: stay alive, not drown etc. Those are the traits I think you need to have to go and survive an expedition to the North Pole!
